Updated October 2026 · Works on all iPad models running iPadOS
Quick answer: On an iPad without a Home button, press the top button + either volume button at the same time. On an iPad with a Home button, press the top button + Home button together. Your screenshot is saved to the Photos app.
Taking a screenshot on an iPad is quick once you know which buttons your model uses. You can also capture your screen with an Apple Pencil, a keyboard, a simple corner swipe, or a single tap with AssistiveTouch.
This guide covers every method, how to tell which iPad you have, where your screenshots are saved, and how to capture a full web page.
Which iPad Do You Have?
The button combination depends on whether your iPad has a Home button (the round button below the screen).
| Your iPad | Screenshot buttons |
|---|---|
| No Home button: iPad Pro (2018 and later), iPad Air (4th gen and later), iPad mini (6th gen and later), iPad (10th gen and later) | Top button + either volume button |
| Has a Home button: older iPad, iPad Air, and iPad mini models | Top button + Home button |
Not sure? Go to Settings → General → About and check Model Name.
Method 1: iPad Without a Home Button
- Open the screen you want to capture
- Press the top button and either volume button at the same time
- Release both buttons quickly
- A thumbnail appears in the corner. Tap it to edit, or swipe it away to save.
Tip: Press and release both buttons together. Holding them too long can turn off the screen or adjust the volume instead.
Method 2: iPad With a Home Button
- Open the screen you want to capture
- Press the top button and the Home button at the same time
- Release both buttons quickly
- Tap the thumbnail to edit, or let it save automatically
Method 3: Apple Pencil
If you use an Apple Pencil, you don’t need any buttons:
- Place the tip of your Apple Pencil in the bottom-left or bottom-right corner of the screen
- Swipe diagonally up toward the center
- Your screenshot opens straight into Markup, ready to draw on
Method 4: Swipe From the Corner With Your Finger
You can set up the same corner swipe for your finger:
- Open Settings → Multitasking & Gestures (on older versions, Settings → General → Gestures)
- Turn on Allow Finger to Swipe From Corner
- Set the bottom-left or bottom-right corner to Screenshot
Now swipe up from that corner with one finger to take a screenshot.
Method 5: Keyboard Shortcuts
If you use a Magic Keyboard, Smart Keyboard, or any Bluetooth keyboard:
- Command + Shift + 3 → full screenshot, saved to Photos
- Command + Shift + 4 → screenshot that opens in Markup so you can edit right away
Method 6: AssistiveTouch (One Tap, No Buttons)
Perfect if your buttons are hard to press or broken:
- Go to Settings → Accessibility → Touch → AssistiveTouch and turn it on
- A floating button appears on the screen
- Tap Customize Top Level Menu and add Screenshot, or set Double-Tap to Screenshot
- Tap the floating button (or double-tap it) to take a screenshot
How to Screenshot a Full Web Page on iPad
- Open the page in Safari
- Take a screenshot using any method above
- Tap the thumbnail in the corner
- Tap Full Page at the top
- Tap Done and save it. The full page saves as a PDF in the Files app.
Where Do Screenshots Go on iPad?
Screenshots save to the Photos app. To find them quickly:
- Open Photos
- Scroll to Media Types
- Tap Screenshots
How to Edit a Screenshot on iPad
Tap the screenshot thumbnail right after you take it to open Markup. You can:
- Crop by dragging the edges
- Draw or highlight with the pen tools
- Add text, shapes, or a signature with the + button
- Tap Done to save, or tap Share to send it

iPad Screenshot Not Working? Try These Fixes
Pressing the buttons does nothing
Make sure you press both buttons at exactly the same time and release them quickly. If one button is broken, use AssistiveTouch (Method 6).
The screenshot is black
Streaming apps like Netflix, Disney+, and Apple TV block screenshots of their videos on purpose.
The screenshot won’t save
Your storage may be full. Check Settings → General → iPad Storage.
Apple Pencil swipe doesn’t work
Check Settings → Apple Pencil and make sure the corner swipe is set to Screenshot. Also make sure your Pencil is charged and connected.
Still not working?
Restart your iPad and update to the latest iPadOS in Settings → General → Software Update.
Want to Record Your Screen Instead?
iPad has a built-in screen recorder, and it works the same way as on iPhone. Open Control Center and tap Screen Recording. For full steps, including how to record with sound, see How to Screen Record on iPhone.
